Over the years Machiavelli directed the Florentine soldiers and was in charge of the reorganization of the republic’s military defence. In 1512 the Medici family came back into power and Machiavelli was removed as a diplomat and arrested for a suspected scheme he commited. To gain back a government position he wrote the “Prince.” It was not published until after he died in 1527.
